Compiled from voter-list and notice-list documents published by the Government of Karnataka across 34 district/BBMP-level sources.

The Challenge

The government publishes these records in a mixture of ZIP archives and individual PDF files, often with inconsistent, lengthy or non-descriptive filenames, making it difficult to locate and check individual records manually.

Processing

We collected the available files, recursively extracted the ZIP archives while preserving the original source files, and processed the text-readable PDFs using MuPDF/PyMuPDF.

IDs were identified and validated according to the prescribed alphanumeric format and checksum rules applicable to the relevant Election Commission data, after which duplicates and extraction artefacts were removed.

Optimization

The resulting records were consolidated into a clean master dataset and then divided into smaller two-letter prefix files (for example, AB.txt, KA.txt, XY.txt) to allow fast, lightweight and efficient searching without requiring users to download the entire dataset.

Updates

The source data is currently being tracked, and changes to the relevant published Google Drive sources are monitored so that newly available or modified data can be processed and the published dataset updated accordingly.
